Locals SNP candidate welcomes government action on allotments
North East Fife SNP prospective Westminster parliamentary candidate Rod Campbell has
welcomed the support of the SNP Conference in calling for government support for the allotment sector in Scotland.
Mr Campbell led a debate (Friday 17th October) on the issue highlighting the growing demand for allotments
in Scotland and the importance of ensuring that appropriate incentives were in place to help the development of these important
community facilities.
Commenting Mr Campbell said:
"I welcome conference’s decision to, not only acknowledge the benefits of allotments, but to support a call for
meaningful support for ‘grow your own’ initiatives in the Scottish Government’s emerging National Food Policy.
“I am therefore particularly pleased at Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead’s announcement at conference, to ask
Public Bodies to consider how land they manage for the
Scottish Government could be made available to local authorities to increase the number of allotments in Scotland."
“We have a number of communities across North East Fife; including Cupar, Newport
and the East Neuk; who are expressing an interest in developing new allotment sites. These
communities need as much practical support as possible and I hope that with Scottish Government support, the local authority
can work with aspiring plotholders to identify suitable land and develop these worthy projects. “
