“The UK Government’s
determination to force the people of Scotland to carry national identity cards is not just
an attack on civil liberties - it has
huge cost implications for us
all.” said Rod Campbell of North East Fife
SNP.
“Latest research shows that the price
of inflicting an ID card on everyone in North East Fife would be
around £6.4 million. The cost
over the Kingdom of Fife as a
whole would be as high as £29.72 million. ” continued Mr.Campbell.
“This bombshell has followed on the
heels of the UK Labour Government’s
plans to slash a massive £500 million from Scotland’s budget
next year.”
“We need to be combating the worst effects of the current world economic problems by maintaining spending on public services and bringing forward new investment in infrastructure. Instead Labour are promising huge cuts and burdening us all with the extra costs of an unwanted and unnecessary ID
card.” said Rod.
"Currently ID cards are voluntary and cost £30 to the individual concerned. However,
in 2012 the UK Government plan to make them
compulsory and will give no
guarantees on future prices.”
Mr. Campbell praised the stance of the Scottish Government against national identity cards and urged Labour to think
again.
